I'd like to promote more of a community in Colorado swordfighting. Especially since the Wreckreation nation show is about to air on The Discovery Channel. We might very well be getting a LOT of new recruits. A strong community is vital to keeping recruits around. Please feel free to share ideas for how we can improve the Colorado Swordfighting community Wreckreation nation info; dsc.discovery.com/tv/wreckreation-nation/highlights.htmlDagorhir's Badon Hill episode airs Tuesday Jan 20th

Per Sirilay on Facebook;
"Rebecca Sirilay Glon commented on your status:
"We have movie nights where we all go out in garb to a fantasy/sci-fi movie. We're also going dressed as our favorite factions to the premiere of the Underwold prequel."
This is an excellent idea !! It premieres on January 23rd. Who wants to go ? What theatre should we go to ?
Other ideas;
~Monthly Dinner out after practice ? Chinese buffet ?
~Bar crawl nights ? In garb with flyers would be great.
Also, visiting other practices is a great way to create community. Carpools to Denver practice and to Melee practice ? Dinner & bar crawling/parties afterwards.

You might want to have a CO camp out sometime this year. Invite all the games, just make sure you have enough extras for any game that doesn't have the types of weapons that would be legal at whatever one is hosting it.
and you also might want to have a feast of sorts, each time you have it have a different game host it and cook the food.
These are two of the things that keep the aratari here in md/va so tight as a realm.

Jari, Excellent ideas ! Thanks for posting ;D ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~Another thing we need to do is get a Female Unit together again. We haven't had one in Mordor since 2002. Amy and Henjin have been talking about putting a new one together. This would really help new female fighters.

I hear allot of ideas for gatherings and such. I think a regular monthly gathering were we can discuses upcoming events, new comers and other goings on are vital! Like every first Saturday or something? I would even offer up my home to host these meetings in. this would be a great way to welcome new comers. I notice allot when I am out on the field and someone even newer than myself wants to join in, that at first they are intimidated because they don't know anyone or what to do. Which weapons they can use or how. And they don't know how to go about asking. Allot of times they end up making asses of them selves and either giving up or get picked on by vet players who are irritated because they don't know the rules. a regular meeting were we discuss the basics, give small lessons in fighting, weapon making, armor, rules, keep up to date on the news techniques and all aspects of foam fighting, would really help make sure everyone is on the same page about what’s going on and what’s acceptable and not on the field. and could really help some newcomers including myself feel more a part of the group and less like they have no idea what’s going on.
Also the girls foam fighting group is a killer idea! And I am so down! Even if we girls just have to break off regular practices and fight together. =)

Monthly Mordor gatherings are a great idea. Thank you for offering your place ! It's perfect for it. I'll be gone this first saturday, could we hold one sooner ? Preferably before the Discovery channel show airs. ( Tues Jan 20th )
Taking the time to teach new fighters is a very good thing. Some realms have certain people who are assigned to this task. I think we should ask for a few volunteers in Mordor, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable types. We should also put together some newbie packets. with a waiver, and some basic welcome information, basic rules, internet addresses, etc.
What name did you like for the girls group ?

I think all of the ideas here are wonderfull, especialy the Garbing up for barhopping, movies, dinners. I agree with the carpooling theory aswell! thers no reason why Denver cant CarP down to Loveland, and Loveland CarP up to Denver. If say Denvers Monthly "event" is schedualed at the Middle of the month, and Loveland allways CarP up to Denver for that, and Denver CarP down to loveland for their Monthly Namaqua. which is the first sunday. that way its spread out for gas purposes. We can all work together to show just how big of an influence we have here in Colorado, and enrich our respective areas by helping our neighbors. Assuming Denver actualy begins a monthly "event" that is of course. With wreckreation nation coming out, i was reading that the dagorhir episode is supposed to run sometime next month. but dont quote me on that. As Crynolyn mentioned, this is probably going to provide a whole MESS of wide eyed new recruits, and we need the logistics to make sure there happy and keep swinging thoes sticks. This includes LOTS and LOTS of Loaner Weapons, and if we really wanted, Loaner Tunics. We may even want to pick up a few 20lb training bows and a cluster of arrows, arching is a great way to hook a new fighter for life. Aside from the obvious things like weapons and location, we are allso going to need many people to help organise this. Which appears to not be a problem at this point, but that doesnt mean others shouldnt voulenteer at any or every opportunity to give a hand to the people who are making everything happen. Seriously ive seen too many good people get burnt out simply because they take too large of a burden upon themselves. Mordor as a realm needs to get its head together, forget about old dramas, and just focus on the sport that we all have struggled for so long to enjoy and help thrive. We should start a promotion push right now honestly! We need to get out to the Malls and the Schools ( the Colleges in Fort collins, several of the Highschools may be approptiate aswell in both Loveland and Fort collins. ) We need to help Advertise ourselves and find out an EXACT showing time for our Wreckreation Nation episode. If we can Show people in person, get them to read a little flyer and watch that show, they will be Compelled to come visit our park next time. We really need to sell the Connection between Dagorhir Colorado and that Episode, because if our sport is cool enough for TV its definitly cool enough for your average person! HELL even people who hate the idea of roleplaying are going to see the Intense fighting Dagorhir provides and say " Damn! i gotta Get me some!" in summary what im saying is that Dagorhir is Poised to make a Killing blow, we need to help make sure that happens for us, and for the rest of the sport! lets represent and make an Army the Likes of which thoes East Costers have never seen, and Crush them ~To the Death.~ Dalmar

Now that I know booze, strippers, and dog fights are completely out of the question...
Dave used to host demonstrations in Fort Collins years ago back when it was a fledgling sport in the area. That's one possibility that comes to mind to gain more exposure. I'm not sure what venues you have available in the area for such a thing. A display of the sport coupled with fighters in garb is what got me involved.
Pot luck picnics in garb would be an awesome thing to do.
And, in all seriousness, I'm still partial to strippers and booze...

Excellent posts Dalmar & Yesh Dagorhir's Wreckreation Nation will air on Tuesday January 20th. I'm sure the Discovery Channel will be playing it again and again over the next year ! Yes, we need loaner weapons and arrows ! We need a weapon making day. Everyone could benefit from more garb. My Mother would like to sew garb for monies. She's an awesome seamstress. Let me know what you need. I'm going to make new flyers with Fort Collins and Denver info. And I'll add; "As seen on The Discovery Channel" Amy mentioned the possibility of us doing a Dagorhir demo on stage at a concert. This would be a good thing after the show airs. Is this Friday or Saturday a good day for a Swordfighting gathering ? Thank you for all the great ideas, keep em coming

for sure ! we can have one when ever we want. my home is always open to foam fighters. the first one should be soon and then at that meeting we can discuss what days work for everyone and plan our next meeting!
also the idea of dressing up to go out! awesome! i love doing this for no reason at all so doing it with a purpose of promoting dag is a great idea! if we are going to do it. we should organize it. bring fliers or info packets to hand out to interested parties. and we should pick destinations restaurants and movies were people might be interested in our craft.
also lets get some local businesses involved some how either by sponsorship or advertising. like leaving fliers and posters in stores. two very good places to start at least in loveland are the rubber closet and the phoenix nest in down town loveland. also the phoenix nest sells armor and garb! they are awesome!
i will volunteer to help teach new comers. as much as i can. i can also give lessons and help with basic garb making and costume assembly. and i am sure the lizard king will be more than happy to help with weapons making and armor and all aspects of fighting!

Building on LadySuicide's suggestion of involving businesses...
One real great way to get businesses involved in advertising is to reciprocate in kind. Something as simple as a (bi)monthly Mordor newsletter (which could also be passed out along with fliers) that includes a page of advertisement for businesses who would advertise Mordor's practices/events/etc would bring lots of incentive for local business to get involved. Or perhaps just a corkboard lugged around to pin up fliers or business cards, etc. Or both!

while i think that yesh has something going, we should remember the fact that all this will require resources for paper, printing ink, and canvasers. we should start with business that are franchise and not corp. as most corp. buildings dont allow posting on things. i know king soopers and wal-mart have bullliten boards in some stores, and the idead of exchanging advertising in our newsletters for bewing able to place the fliers in there stores.
cryn i wouldnt qoute me on this but discovery channel may have a phone number you can call and get a video recording of the epsiode from wreckreation nation. im sure we can get a cheap/free copy if we say were from some school around here if not it would still be cool to get something we could take to an auditorium at red rocks or something.
i hope this helps or at least makes sense, cause im not spell checking

I'm pretty sure I can record it onto a VHS tape. We have Comcast routing thru our VCR. I also have it set to record on the DVR. It will be airing next Tuesday at 8pm !! Amy has graciously invited us to have a Mordor Gathering at her place Friday. 6 to 8pm. Please come ! Please tell other Mordoriens that do not frequent the internet. We will be voting on Mordor positions, and we will be talking about how to improve Mordor, how to get ready for recruits, and everything being mentioned in this thread. Keep the ideas coming

I was thinking more along the lines of bars and sandwich shops...
Small businesses are usually pretty eager to get their name out by whatever means necessary. When I ran my own shop we often exchanged fliers and cards with other businesses to gain advertisement in the area. Worked out quite well. Those corkboards in grocery stores are also quite beneficial.
