Newsletter - Colorado Medieval Festival(c) 2006 04/03/2006
Returning from the Crusades! The site has been confirmed for the Colorado Medieval Festival© on June 2-4, 2006. It is located at 8161 S CR-19, Fort Collins, CO. See www.ColoradoCastle.com for map and directions.
Art Contest judging was completed at our board meeting on April 3rd. we had a great selection of works to review and judge. A lot of high school works but much fewer works in the adult, Jr. High and elementary then we had hoped for. Just a note, if they do not enter they can not win. The winners will be announced on Sunday June 4th at noon during the festival.
The April 15th site walk-through and gate-raising has been moved to Saturday, May 6. We will meet at the site, 8161 S County Rd 19 (Wilson Ave. in Loveland or Taft Hill Rd. in Fort Collins) “Coyote Ridge Ranch”, at 10 AM. This will correspond with the volunteer meeting, so there should be plenty of hands to make light of the work.
RenScotts (Clan Wolf) – a group of 10 people with their own encampment, working smith and weaver, demonstrations, shows. The group is balking at the $150 fee to cover hard costs involved for the 10 individuals, so the Women’s Auxiliary (members of the Colorado Medieval Festival© board comprising of Connie, Margie, and Tess) have agreed to subsidize them. Let us all give this ladies special salute for this. Down you randy girls, down!
Women on the Edge – Mary showed up at the board meeting at 8:00 PM to present her ideas for the archery contest and concession at this year’s festival. It is possible that Chuck’s folks may work with her, but that is between them. Andy will be subsidizing the Archery range by purchasing the bows and arrows used. Mary will train the volunteers to assure safety for everyone. Here again board members are coming to the rescue for the short falls suffered from Colorado Medieval Festival© being rained out most of last Junes event. A special accolade for Andy also. As a matter of fact, let’s give all the board members of Colorado Medieval Festival© a round of applauses for making Colorado Medieval Festival© possible.
Jim spoke about paperclip advertising, after a lively conversation, Jim will look into options based on guidelines provided by Roger. Due to last years short fall in funding, as for marketing of the Colorado Medieval Festival© 2006, everyone is going to have to help by making sure the word gets out to the communities about the June 2-4, 2006 festival. Even more so than last year in which so many of you help let people know about the first time festival in Northern Colorado. Let’s all start talking up Colorado Medieval Festival© 2006, while waiting in line at the markets, restaurants or anywhere and to anyone and everyone. Roger will be posting a form that can be printed with information about the event that can be handed out. The form will have 10 to a page that can be printed and cut into card size handouts on plain paper or on standard 8-1/2 by 11 card stock. Check for the link on the home page (www.ColoradoCastle.com) for the “CMF2006CARDS” link. These are available online now.
Brian Becker resigned as main curator of the museum, citing health problems. Depending on how it goes, he may or may not make it to the Festival in June. Until another person can be assigned, Eric will assume the collection, presentation and safety of loaned items for the museum display. Let us all wish Brian a complete and speedy recovery. Tess said that she is lending the King and Queen garments for the festival.
We are ½ way to our goal with volunteers. The event “Red Rocks Fantasy Rebel” at Red Rock Community College in Lakewood on April 20 from 9am-3pm should help make up our volunteer numbers. Anyone wishing to volunteer at Colorado Medieval Festival© can email VolunteersNorth@coloradocastle.com for volunteers living north of Denver and VolunteersSouth@coloradocastle.com for volunteers living in Denver and south of Denver.
This year we will include a “Pub” for people to gather at and will provide beer sales (beer provided by Fort Collins Brewing Co.) for Medieval World, USA©, a Colorado not for profit organization. It is all coming together and will be ready by opening day. We may even have the return of “Jester Ale” which was brewed by especially for Colorado Medieval Festival© by Fort Collins Brewing Co. last year.
Miscellaneous notes: Medieval World, USA© is hosting the beer sales this year, it has officially been organized as a Colorado not for profit corporation.
SAFETY ISSUE: Most important: Fire danger is high in the area, as it is surrounded by native prairie grass. All open flame fires must be contained in barrels or other appropriate containers. Safety idea: I believe it would be a good idea to keep a wind watch out, and if the breezes start to kick up too much, then the Festival requests all parties with an open flame to extinguish them, just until the danger is over. I expect most people will do this any way, but it does not hurt to be too cautious when dealing with fire. (ccj). This also applies to all smoking, look for designated area(s) only for any smoking. If this fire danger is elevated we may request “no sumo-king” anywhere on site.
We are looking at having a petting zoo this year for the younger ‘rennies’. Details on this are still being worked out. Margie will contact a 4H club to see if they will sponsor the petting zoo. We will need a list of the type of animals to make appropriate provisions, but they should be animals that we common to the old world and child friendly.
If we get a request from someone to have their wedding at the site, Tess has minister and baker contacts. But this will require some advance notice and a lot of work on our part to assemble a package. We should look more closely at this in coming presentations.
Finally I would like to thank the Fort Collins, Foothills Rotary Club for their participation in last years event, although they will not be joining us this year, they earned a little money for their fundraiser and had a lot of fun doing it at Colorado Medieval Festival© 2005
