~~~~~This was posted by Flittie on the Dag board "...the game as it was developed by Brian Wiese; a game that combines the fantasy worlds of books such as "Lord of the Rings" with the Dark Age Europe that exists in historical fiction. A game where Elves, Saxons, Dwarves, and Britons armed with arrows, swords, and spears roam the woods together in their wolfpacks, searching for combat in their quest of the opponents’ flag. Dagorhir is not a game of tournaments and established pecking orders. [glow=purple,2,000]It’s a game about the group, not about the individual. A game where your reputation and honour are maintained through the way in which you conduct yourself[/glow] in the playing of the game, not entitled through a ranking system. A game where those who facilitate and manage the administrative aspects are voted into their positions by their [glow=blue,2,300]selfless dedication to the game[/glow] and the display of their managerial efficiency, not through Machiavellian skills or athletic prowess. A game where any honourable, considerate person can fully enjoy themselves and be made welcome regardless of their athletic abilities."~~~~~~~~~~~ Since we're resurrecting old threads, the above selection is from a 2001 post by Brian Wiese (Aratar), the founder of Dagorhir. It's somewhat out of context as I have posted it, but I think it's a concise statement of the original vision of Dagorhir. Aratar was distinguishing his vision of Dag from the way that other combat games are structured, where the best rattan stick fighters get organization-wide titles, ranks, and offices. Personally, I find the statement inspiring because I'm rather lacking in athletic abilities, but I do try to pursue honorable and considerate behavior. Note that I don't think Aratar was opposed to all tournaments; I think he disapproved of tournaments being used to select leaders. Anyway, what do you all think of his statement? How well does it apply to Dag in 2006? -------------------- Mistress Felicitie "Flittie" Smeddum, The Guard, Aratari ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is the best post I've seen in a long time, so I wanted to be sure to share it with those of you who don't frequent the National Dagorhir Boards www.dagorhir.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=001934( www.dagorhir.com )
BTW,
Mach•i•a•vel•li•an
Pronunciation: (mak"ç-u-vel'ç-un), [key] —adj. 1. of, like, or befitting Machiavelli. 2. being or acting in accordance with the principles of government analyzed in Machiavelli's The Prince, in which political expediency is placed above morality and the use of craft and deceit to maintain the authority and carry out the policies of a ruler is described. 3. characterized by subtle or unscrupulous cunning, deception, expediency, or dishonesty: He resorted to Machiavellian tactics in order to get ahead. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
(I knew it was bad, but I was curious of the actual definition)
Words from the original "administrator". I think that everyone goes through phases, and this is the later phase when you really don't care if you win or loose anymore. You're there for other reasons. Some people never make it there and some make it there quickly. Choosing leaders by prowess is folly. That will foster an environment of rhino hiders and the group will eventually fall apart. I choose leaders by integrity and work ethic, not sword skill.
I also tend to choose my closer friends that way as well.
More good stuff from that thread on the dag board;
(...... are where I edited to shorten the post)
Dudley S. Thunder posts;
"When I first joined Dagorhir a year ago, I fought with Thalandor and at my first practice I realized “hey these guys are a bunch of up tight jerks who wouldn’t give me a glass of water in the desert“. But for some odd reason I came back the next week with my own shoddily made weapons and they were a little less, how do I put this, douche baggy. As the weeks passed and I kept coming they were nicer to me, after my first battle there was no more ass clownism
....... we under went a leadership change, lost a majority of our core members ..... so we ..... dropped our name and became The Order, now under new leadership we are getting more newbs and they are staying because we don't have the pretentious jerks who wanted nothing more than there own personal glory.
Although I came back week after week many didn’t and we lost a lot of friendly people who could have made our unit better. This is a prime example of a horrible unit, no leadership, no recruiting, and a bad attitude. On the field they may have “pwned” people but they didn’t give anything back to the sport that gave them so much, ......... Now, we try and create a persona not just a guy with a big noodle stick, Eryndor does a spectacular job of making Dagorhir better for everyone, and if everyone tried as hard as they did Dagorhir would be better for it. This may seen like a long winded rant, but it does have a point, and that point being , Dagorhir is a community, you may not like some of the people in it but you do have to co-exist with them, if you don’t like how something is run and you don’t do anything about then there are plenty of other foam fighting games to play. Every person associated with Dagorhir should do there best to make it the biggest, best and most enjoyable game out there. "... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I posted this becasue I want people to realize how important it is for us to be nice to the new people. General attitude on the field is far more important than you might think. Without new fighters Mordor will stagnate, and won't be as much fun. None of us want that.
That is just a great post, and I fully agree with you Cryn. Our weekly practices here in Stygia, formerly Gorothannon, now average around 30-35 and can reach upwards of 50+ on a great day. This is in great part due to our openess toward newbs no matter how dorkified or terrible of a fighter they may be. Our local U-Hai unit is 18 fighters strong plus a few slaves. We have a lot of fun just at our practices every week, and part of that is because of our numbers.
"A game where any honourable, considerate person can fully enjoy themselves and be made welcome regardless of their athletic abilities." is prolly the single most improtant statement I have seen about this game in a great while.
PS COME TO CHAOS WARS!!
Wisdom from Eryndor's 2007 restructuring; Guys, check out the re-structuring ideas from Eryndor.. There are a lot of good points in here. [glow=blue,2,300]Future of Eryndor[/u][/glow] You really need to read that entire page if you want the entire picture, but here are some excerts; "As we speak today, Eryndor is somewhere between 120 and 150 members. We’ve had people like [glow=teal,2,300]Aratar, creator of Dagorhir, say that “Eryndor is what Dagorhir is supposed to be all about.” [/glow]We’ve had some Dagorhir veterans call Eryndor “the savior of Dagorhir.” And simply, no chapter in the modern history of Dagorhir has exploded in size as fast as we have. In other words, Eryndor has succeeded beyond anyone’s wildest expectations, and we blew our first assumption to smithereens...." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Eryndor is definately doing something right Mordor can learn from this.I thought some of the possible downfalls that he listed sounded sadly familiar. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "· Everyone becomes part of their own “unit clique.” I see this as a legitimate concern… [glow=green,2,300]anyone who knows national Dagorhir knows that there are many units who like to be their own little “clique” of (well, at least they think so anyway) “cool kids” who are better than others and like to be elitist[/glow]. This new unit model opens the door to this type of “cliqueness” to form among Eryndor units… we no longer all become friends and instead all bikcer and become our own little middle-school style posses. My argument to this is that people choose to let this sort of silliness happen… magically adding units doesn’t create “cliques.” In other words, the people who are in or run units may be elitist jerks who create a “holier than thou” attitude… but being part of a unit doesn’t force otherwise cool people to suddenly become these kinds of jerks, they were that way long before. I would argue that Eryndor units should [glow=blue,2,300]counteract this possibility by actively refusing to become “cliqueish.” Hang out with other units! Be friends with other units! Always be welcoming and friendly to everyone! Recruit together! Practice together! [/glow]Give each other chocolates during Valentine’s Day! And, I know I personally speak for at least “The Crusade,” that that sort of “eliteist” behavior is something we will never, ever, EVER let happen. Dagorhir is about friendship and love, and I suspect that most, if not all, Eryndor units believe in the original spirit of Eryndor. · Related to the last point – we won’t all be friends anymore! First off, Eryndor was not “all friends” in the first place. With 150 people, we ALL likely had a few people we didn’t like or care for… that’s life, and its okay. [glow=purple,2,300]Its okay not to like someone – to unnecessarily be a jerk to them is not cool.[/glow] But on the other hand, we definitely did have a very broad sense of “super-mega fun friendliness and camaraderie.” Why should that go away just because we have units? My argument to that is I think the friendships in Eryndor are stronger than being broken just because we all are now a part of different pretend groups who paint our shields with different colors of acrylic paint. I sincerely hope all of the friendships I made with Eryndorrim are stronger than seeing a different logo on a shield cover. · Earlier I said units need to be not just about themselves, but about Eryndor and Dagorhir as a whole. What do I mean “for the sake of Eryndor and for the sake of Dagorhir”? Well, that’s pretty simple, actually. I mean that units must be willing to take a step back from your own unit’s self-interests and not treat every new Eryndor member as though they are a piece of meat to be weighed, measured, and fought over. During some long and honest conversations with many members of other established chapters, this “fighting over the recruiting pool” is a HUGE problem in some unit-heavy chapters, and it REALLY turns people off of Dagorhir. Fast. I’m sure many of you have either felt personally, observed, or maybe actually engaged in this “Dagorhir Meat Market” yourself… it was an unfortunate consequence of the Erydnor battle ranks requirement of recruiting new members… there were plenty of times I saw people instantly descend upon brand new members (who had been fighting for all of 20 minutes), trying to “claim them their own” as soon as possible so that they could reach their recruit number. This was a sad and pretty selfish behavior that was an unfortunate consequence of a bad design in our ranking system. I potentially see this problem as being even worse in a unit-centered Eryndor model… units desperate to grow their ranks with fighters could be tempted to pressure brand new members to join a unit before the new fighter has hardly even had a chance to experience Dagorhir. Simply put, we need units and unit leaders to not let this “mad grab” mentality to become pervasive throughout Eryndor. Eryndor WILL become a less fun place to be and WILL become a much worse place for new people if we let this happen. In short, if new units only worry about themselves, we’ll very quickly not have much of a chapter to be proud of. This is something we need to address amongst all of ourselves in an honest and open manner – how do we make sure this doesn’t happen? It IS a problem in other chapters, so it IS very real… let’s make sure its not a problem in Eryndor. This ALSO means we need to respect the sanctity of each unit. Trying to recruit OTHER members away from another unit is bad, bad, bad form. It doesn’t grow the chapter, doesn’t grow Dagorhir, and it only hurts feelings. But on the SAME token, we need to all be cool and respect that individual fighters may CHOOSE to leave one unit and join another. We need to all NOT take this personally. Fighters have a right to go where they are happiest… but by their own choice......" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Their new model reminds me of the Aratari's. ( Which is what we used to model our by-laws ) Very wise stuff.
Athron has a really good head on his shoulders.
