Are there any rules about using Vinyl as your clothing instead of leather? It's just that I can use Vinyl (mostly cause I can afford it) but not leather (mostly because I cannot afford it) Is Vinyl frowned upon?

I wouldn't see why not as long as your not using it for armor. you might want to sew it to some cloth though so you dont have to deal with the white crap on the back(if same type i've seen before). just an idea plus it'll make it look a litlle more period. have you had a chance to make it out yet?

No I haven't been able to make it out yet, Always having to work on Sundays. What I was thinking about for the Vinyl was the Armor that the Elves Wear at Helms Deep in Two Towers. I know the Vinyl would not count as armor, but I figure if it looks cool and I should probably try to avoid getting hit in the first place I guess I also wanted to know if using those two-handed, 5 foot long, half handle-half blade Elvin swords would be legal.

so far nobody has said no to vinyl. Scion said he doesn't see a problem with it. give it a couple of days so I can see what other people say but so far the vinyl is a go. you can have a five foot blade if you want no problem there but the handle has a max it can be i cant remeber right now but ill get back to you on that in a little while.

I can say this about Vinyl, It never really looks right. You would be better off using regular fabric for just about ANY garb project you can think of. Vinyl always has a slightly plastic look to it and tends to be quite flimsy looking. If your thinking of making something that mimics armor, you'll be sorely disappointed in the outcome. I seriously doubt anyone would disallow vinyl on the field, but you would be much better served by using nice cloth instead. It will look better and be more comfortable. Besides, if you want a leather look, go to your local goodwill or salvatioon army store. Leather clothing sells for almost nothing (2 dollars and up) and can be, with a little patients, turned in to some very nice looking genuine leather garb. =)

You cannot have anything that mimics armor that is not in fact armor. In other words, if it looks like armor but doesnt count as armor then its against the rules.

helpful hints with vinyl from Alara
if you're the one sewing it be aware of a few things. It sticks to a regular preser foot, so you either need to spring for a teflon foot *or* use cheap (thinnest you can find that isn't tissue paper) paper to keep things moving.
use a longer stitch length or you will find your seams suddenly come apart when the stitches cut the fabric.
do not back stitch (see above) leave a tail of thread and tie knots.
don't iron it, it'll melt. use a glue stick to hold the hems until you sew them down and use clips (quilt binding clips work) or paper clips to hold the seams for sewing, pin holes are permanent.
cleaning you wipe it off, just be aware it does not breathe and gets sticky hot fast. But it does have the good points of being cheaper than leather, and you can get the black patent look.

Well, You reminded me that Thrift Store leather is cheap (Just gotta wait for fairly clear garments to come in) and The best bit is....I work in a thrift Store. So I'll be looking for leather to make a LOTR-inspired suit but I want it a bit more practical and personalised (just watched the Last Samurai so I got major amped) Course all this might be for not cause I have no idea when I'll be able to get out and fight.

Hey! I knows Alara!
If you wants good vinyl--and if is okay to use vinyl as leather armor, you can use marine vinyl. Is thicker.
Marine vinyl looks more like real leather and comes in a variety of thicknesses.
Marine vinyl over batting or foam makes an armor that'll take a hit good.
And, to gets it through the sewing machine use a bit of spray oil, like PAM or silicone spray--just wipe it off when you is done.
The Galadrim armor isn't suited to vinyl, though. The Second Age armor is, the kind Elrond wore as Gil-galad's herald.

if your gonna make some leather costuming then you might want to go ahead and just make it armor countable as well. prolly wouldnt take that much more effort. just some layering or adding some metal bits.
