Lets start the planning !
Everyone please share your opinions ! Who is officially running this event ? So far I know of Soong, Sven and myself. Anyone else ?
Idea's for names ? ( I like Sven's name , the mist that rises after the end of the world )
Theme ?
Battle scenarios ?
Dates ? (Fall 2005 ?)
Place ? ( Sven is suggesting Southern Utah, which I like becouse people can fly into Las Vegas and rent a car to drive to the site)
( Will it be rough camping or can we get a place with showers and maybe even a kitchen ? )
Fund raising ?
Donations ? ( pavilions, lanterns, torches, megaphone, etc.)
~~~~~~~
There will be prizes for characterization, like best Deaths, best garb, best role-playing etc... any more idea's ?
I'd like to propose that the Dark Angels run the assasin's tourney. On a Killing Style point system. (Hopefully a lot of DA will be there, but I'll still do it even if it's only me )
Shall we follow the blueprint of Rag ? Weapons check from 10 till 12, Fellowship revel, Sin night, Slave auction on Friday ? etc.
Who volunteers to help with Troll, heralding, weapons checking, cooking etc ?
Anybody want to teach some classes ? I sadly missed out on all but the weapons check class at Rag. I really wanted to see Scion's class too. I was bummed.
Merchants ? I'm not sure how big we'll be, so that may be a stretch.
I'm hoping we can get 100 foam swordfighters. Or at least 50 veterens ?
Oh , and let's make it very clear that All Foam swordfighting groups are welcome, including Mottistone, Belegarth, Darkon, and maybe even Amtgard. ( But they need to use Dagorhir weapons) What groups am I forgetting ?
What do you guys think ? ;D
Place: As a suggestion, let's start looking at the Zion National Park area in Southern Utah. This is roughly 8-10 hour drive for the L.A., Colorado, Washington, & Oregon. The scenery is impressive enough that several folks from from back East would come out for just that. Also it's 2-3 hours from the Airports in Las Vegas & Assault Lake City. Plenty of camping there & I'm sure I could force myself to go check some of them out <wink> that would give us plenty of otions as to camping style.
I have extra Viking style tents that we can use for the Troll Headquarters. I run a Viking Age Living History Encampment every year & can bring stuff from that.
Time: I like Fall 2005, let's see if we can get a 3 day week-end since that will aid both school types & wage-slaves. I think we should start for something less ambisious than a week until we build a following out here.
Battle Scenarios: Here's one: Smack the Tail on the Orc. You have one blindfolded guy in the center of a circle of 4 orcs. 3 of them have weapons & one of them points his posterior toward the center (or use a pell). The blind folded guy is spun around & gets 1 or 2 resurections. He has to hit the pell or the un-armed orc with a killing blow.
Let's also try to add an educational theme to it as well, because then we can use Crynolyn's gender & the School-kids position to perhaps get a grant for this as seed money. I will teach some classes along that line if it can help. I can teach shield building on site, inkle weaving, history, & that sort of ilk. I could even do some metal casting on site if they allow camp-fires.
Yes all groups & scenarios should be welcome (with the provisios that Crynolyn mentions) & that politicing is strictly forbidden under penatly of having your ureac passage glued shut.
of course i'm in. i'm just an assistant admin though but soong is nothing without me. NOTHING I TELL YOU!!!
I agree with my man sven that we should make it a weekender to start with and try to keep our ambitions in check until we got the numbers and the resourses.
and rather than imitating rag i'd like to see us develop something unique and more our own. And just as lady Cryn said we should put alot of emphasis on things such as characterization and make that sort of thing at least as equal to fighting. Thats something that really dissapointed me about rag was all the awards for tournaments but no recognition for all the other things that make dagorhir great.
Perhaps for fighting scenarios, as well as classes, we can see what different realms in attendance might want to provide. what events they may want to hold and what responsibility they'll take for those events.
I know Sven really has the knowledge to teach the hell out of some classes. I'm sure others can step up and help out too. Lemmee think and see if i know anything anyone else may want to know....
WHEN? Everyone seems to like the 2005 idea, so lets call that our preferred goal for a first year. Having the event in fall is my preference. The further away from Ragnarok season that we can get it, the better. If we could place it 6 months opposite, I would believe that the best. Unfortunately, 6 months from a mid June event is December! I don’t imagine many people will want to fight right before Christmas in the frigid western wastes. With that in mind, October may be a good choice but I’m not sure that it will be good weather even then. At least from a Colorado point of view, its already snow season. If anyone has a clearer picture of Southern Utah’s Late fall weather, pipe in and let us know. I would love an October dated event, I think it would be perfect if the weather isn’t an issue.
Where?
Location should be talked about some more just to keep option available for discovery, but I have to admit that Zion looks fantastic and is in prime location for the converging groups. Lets at the very least keep our eyes open to other possibilities for the next few months. Still, Im rooting for Zion right now.
Who?
ANYONE! As far as the inclusiveness of the event, I would like to make sure that all other foam and LARP groups we can engage in conversation with will be aware of and invited to this event. I want to see them all! Da JhurGah has a very definite “open invitation” attitude. No one will be turned away. In addition to this, and in agreement with Sven, I would like to declare our event a NO POLITICS zone and the only serious business discussions that will be going on there will be “who’s hosting and volunteering for this gig next year” discussions.
Theme?
First Western event theme…well, this is going to be a group effort correct? I believe we can get a running vote on it and see what comes out the top idea. Everyone start thinking about it and we can make a thread dedicated to ideas for the theme and then vote once we have narrowed it down a bit.
Donations?
The donation of supplies will be a concern. I don’t know what a three day would need or what the final decision for location may already provide. This part will reveal it self more as we narrow down location. As far as getting grants/$$ donations is concerned… Im not aware of how heavily Ragnarok and the other events are supplemented by these sources but I was imagining that most of the money came from the entrance fees. I suppose we could research this more with questions to the previous Rag hosts. Sven, Im aware that under one of Prez. Bushes new policies, that outdoor programs for school kids are elegable for grants, but Im not versed in any of the actual logistics of such a thing. I have a good friend who is heavily involved in all aspects of the theater for kids business and he might know more. What do you know? A lengthy description of what it takes to get the grants or maybe a link or three would be much appreciated. That might be something worth looking at seriously. Teaching classes could be spread out between many of us as I believe that out of the 5 founding members of Da JhurGah, 4 of us have skills that could be taught to kids and adults alike. I personally could teach Tai Chi/Chi Kung fundamentals and I’m pretty sure I could enlist Koobok to do a writing or Poetry class. WaSaD could do a improv/acting/stage combat class and I bet most of us could do any minor Dagorhir arts and sciences based class. There’s great potential there.. Lets discuss this more!
Awards/Prizes?
Back when I was living in Nashville/Clarksville area, whenever we went to an event. RAG, Beltane, Equinox. There were always prizes awarded for every major event. Usually some sort of token or trophy for the winner or winners. There were also prizes awarded (and the best prizes in my mind) for lots of other things and in the tradition of that long ago time, I would like to continue this. The prizes I remember were for Characterization, Best Death, Best Garb, Best Kill, Leadership, Unit, Best Field Charge, etc. There are more and the list, as you can well imagine, can grow huge. I propose picking 5 to 10 of those awards and developing ideas for them. It can be hard to keep up with all of that and still do your job on the field so the fewer, the more accurate the results will be for the winner and the prize given.
Using Ragnarok as a blueprint?
As far as following a blueprint created at Ragnarok is concerned, I don’t think its going to work like that. Because Rag is getting so big they have a particular type of schedule to cover all the people, time and requirements therein. I would imagine that our first event is going to be quite a bit smaller, shorter and more intimate that Rag has grown to be. If we are to imitate anything, we might be better off imitating Beltaine or one of the other weekend events. I don’t think our first year should be any longer than an extended weekend (Three day event at best) nor should it be overly elaborate other than the amount of fighting and merriment that is involved. Perhaps in the future we will require the scheduling and model make of an event as huge and successful as Rag, but in the mean time we should focus on this event as a work in progress and let it evolve in to what ever it may.
Volunteers/Help?
Volunteers will come forward as the event draws near but in my experience, the organizers should expect minimal support from visiting fighters, even the ones who volunteer, as it is likely they will wander off (Koobok knows all about that scenario) or forget their duties all together. Those who create this event will most likely see little battle and much heralding, dishwashing and cleanup and should be prepared to do so with a smile.
Scenarios/Battles/Parties/general mayhem?
This is obviously the icing on the cake of planning such an event. Much needs to be discussed and the final decisions can be made long from now. Getting the logistics taken care of first will make deciding on what type of fun to have that much easier. Perhaps a thread about this should be made as well. Seeing as we have over a year and a half to plan it, I think were safe to let this one ride for a while.
So, that’s my thoughts for the moment, Please respond with comments, corrections and additions.
We can make this happen. We can make it good.
Soong.
Oh and.... Im going to repeat this on the National board sos we might get some more involvment from westerners.
Weather averages in Zion in mid October. This is an incredible looking forcast for daytime, but we might want to forewarn people of the nighttime drops in temp!
This would also make our event the best looking as far as garb is concerned, you know. Cooler weather means more people in layered garb and armor and boots and cowls and such...Oooo Im getting excited!
Very good ideas !! I'm getting so excited about this !
Who has a link to Zion's webpage ? I'm curiuos of the prices and I would like to see the pictures of it again.
Those temps sound perfect ! Thanks for looking them up Soong ! Gives me an idea, one prize for night time garb, and another prize for battlefield garb.
Here's a few little things I remember, we'll need to create flyers with all the events to hand out at troll. I'll help with that.
Let's have scheduled party/events each night to get everyone together.
What sort of token shall we hand out for the registered attendants ? I love the handmade stuff, Fimo ? Or maybe even something similair to the Rag 10 tokens ?
I think I will try to get my film developed while we're there so I can sell some of the pics to pay for part of the film & development charges. ( Bede was selling pics for $2 a piece at Rag. )
FYI, the "In depth" link ( Blue circle on the right side) on that page has lots more info www.nps.gov/zion/Campgrounds.htmGroup prices are $3 per person. But in groups up to 40. Maybe that will be all we need... It's so hard to predict. I wonder what our entrance fee should be, $15 or 20 ? I suppose it depends on how much food & drink we will be providing, and the prizes.
....snip... What sort of token shall we hand out for the registered attendants ? I love the handmade stuff, Fimo ? Or maybe even something similair to the Rag 10 tokens ? This is simple as pie: I can kill two stones with one bird. If someone makes a simple pattern out of Fimo clay (no undercutting) I can cast it in lead free B7-pewter over a bloody campfire even. Thus we can do the medals for the events & we can do medals for the pre-Reg people that would be collector Items. This encourages Pre-Reg! Being the doddering old Ancient, who can barely stand up & fight, that I am (as I'm sure Crynolyn & Koobok can attestify) I remember the days in the SCA Kingdom of the West where they had "The Old Battered Helm" & the "Muckin-Great-Clubbe" as awards for best death & fiercest Warrior respectively. Thes awards wer precisely what they said. The OBH was this old freon can helm that each winner added a dent to & the MGC was a big hunk of polished wood with a spike thru it. These tattery old objects were revered & coveted. We can I'm sure come up with something similar. :
ooo... i like the idea for the event tokens. One thing i like to do and i know Soong's all about this as well is to make the prizes for events and such unique and somehow suited towards the event. Getting a medal for winning something is cool, but getting a raw sounding horn wrapped in fur for characterization is friggin AWESOME!
Also I can show you how to scrimshaw (carve in designs) into the horn. Along the lines of the contests, we need to have someone sponsor each contest, set up the rules (well before hand so they can be published), establish the judges, & get the prize lined up.
I would be willing to help out some, and I am sure if I can get any of my people down they would too. I cannot make any promises as of yet, but I am sure I will know as things get closer and plans become more defined.
As far as they whole Rag copy thing I think that you all are going right with the different direction idea. You should make it your own.
As for events...I would certainly like to see the Orc Invasion come to life...Hur! Hur!
Date is good I think.
I like the idea of different prizes for stuff other than just fighting.
i would love to learn Soong's Tai Chi/ Chi Kung exercises!!
I think you all got the right idea here...run with it, it sounds soooooooo great!
Soong, what's your phone number? I have lots of input on everything, but I'd rather have a real conversation about it.
Soong, what's your phone number? I have lots of input on everything, but I'd rather have a real conversation about it. Doesn't this kind of defeat the purpose of this topic in that we're trying to roundtable ideas so the burden of hosting this event doesn't just fall on one person & no one gets the mistaken idea of the event being hijacked. Ralimar, I know for myself, that I respect you & value your ideas. I would also like to hear them, as I'm sure others would, so that it can in turn inspire other ideas & thoughts.
Don't forget about chaos wars! August 13-17th, at Indian springs, ID. Dagorhir and amtgard people will be in attendance as well as belegarth. I am all for helping with a western rag. as long as the time does not interfere with chaos wars.
