Ok, so I've gotten a general idea of what I want. A few materials to do it with, and the rest are fairly accessible.
The concept, is to have a sort of a lightweight half Breastplate which appears as metal (which is one of the the questions) or could appear as a sort of...cloth or otherwise light armor. (The item in question is something akin to hockey armor, covering upper chest, shoulders, and biceps well. Though it has no plastic)
Under which, will be a simply tabard, secured with a simple belt using D rings (Tabard can be created easily enough with a sheet, shirt or any other kinda long, malleable cloth.) The pants, are likely going to be martial art pants, or sweat pants with modern bits cut off.
Greives (constructed of modern plastic shin and knee guards) will have to be somehow made to appear more...period related...with boots of a sort below.
Now, my current materials are a Hockey vest
( The idea is to either spray it with metallic paint of the color I prefer, or tape over it...or some combination of the two)

Akin to this, but mine is black, and darker blue.
Shin guards
(The idea here is similar to above.)

and combat boots. (how I intend to make these more period correct..consists of removing the current strings and loops, and replacing it with a set of buckles and belts. Though I'm not sure if this would work)
What I'm looking for, is perhaps some advice on the subject. Will these items work? What would be the best way to achieve a period correct (or rather, fantasy)look? Any suggestions for going about it?
